Security

Network security is one of those things that everyone knows that they should do but generally finds a way not to get around to it until it’s an emergency.  You know, someone has gotten a Trojan on their bxp66767smachine and now it does things on its own (very bad).  Or your ISP says that there’s lots of suspicious traffic coming from your server and they’re going to disconnect you if you don’t fix it quickly (worse).  Or the FBI or other law enforcement agency contacts you and informs you that they’ve gotten word that information from your company is being sold on the internet and you’ll have to place an announcement in the paper informing the public of this data breach, contact all of your clients/customers and inform them, and notify everyone on your board so you can start battening down the hatches because the press can’t be far behind (worst case scenario).

There’s no one aspect of network security that outweighs all the others.  The best firewall in the world isn’t worth anything if it isn’t configured correctly and monitored.  Without an up-to-date antivirus on every machine (and an anti-malware/rootkit program as well) it doesn’t matter who you keep out when that infected server/workstation invites people in or sends all the keystrokes it’s stored out while it downloads other malware to spread throughout the network.

At Capstone Technologies Group, we believe network security should be treated holistically.  That is, the complete network should be evaluated and managed rather than try to pick one piece and harden that.  A vulnerability analysis is a great place to start this process.  We evaluate every aspect of your network, from wireless network security to firewall configuration to your current security policies.  What applications are installed on which machines and why?  Most security breaches are inside jobs.  One disgruntled employee is all it takes.  We examine the physical security of your network such as, is the server located in an unlocked room in the back?   As IT security consultants it is our job to make your job safer.  Many industries now mandate a penetration test on at least an annual basis.  We can perform this test for you- black hat, gray hat, or white hat.

Are you losing productivity because your employees are surfing social networking sites or Craigslist during business hours?  We have solutions for that.  Often machines get infected by going to these unauthorized sites.  Just recently the New York Times was an unwitting accomplice to infected software being installed on computers visiting their website and being served infected 3rd party advertisements.
